Amazon signals launch of a its own Smartphone with 3D interface

Speculations are rife, coming June 18, there would be something special showcased by online retail giant – Amazon. The company is holding an event on June 18 where it expected to show off a smartphone, possibly with a 3D interface.

Amazon.com could reveal its long-awaited smartphone as reported by Wall Street Journal earlier. The website had earlier reported that the Amazon was planning to release a smartphone in the second half of this year. If the speculations materialize, we could soon have a new brand competing the likes of Apple and Samsung Electronics Co.

The e-commerce giant tweeted a link to its online invite form Wednesday, requesting customers to “Join Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos for our launch event” on June 18. Visitors interested would have to submit a request for access, added with a description – why they want to attend the event. It has already started taking submissions from developers and journalists.

The good part is Amazon will arrange travel and lodging for any selected customers or developers who live outside of Seattle. It, however failed to reveal information about number of folks it will let into the event. All who made it to the list are likely to receive confirmation by June 12.

Amazon’s Twitter account signals that the device could be the long-rumored Amazon smartphone. In a video on its site (watch below), actors are seen reacting to something held off-screen in their hands surprisingly. The company seems to be challenging its own image by opening doors for customers, earlier restricted to journalists and partner developers. The company has reiterated its doctrine time and again that its primary focus is its customers, so the open invite to consumers can be perceived as a latest precedent for it to drive the point home.
