Idea Cellular has reduced the mobile data costs for its prepaid customers by up to 45 percent in an attempt to retain existing users and gain prospective users.
The impending launch of the Reliance Jio has forced almost every cellular service provider in India to bring price cuts in their tariff. Idea, which has the third largest customer base in the country, will now provide more volume of data on its existing 2G, 3G, and 4G internet packs without changing their prices.
Idea users will get up to 45 percent more data volume on internet packs providing below 1 GB data. For Rs. 19, Idea will be giving 110 MB of 2G data for three days, instead of 75 MB of 2G data with three days’ validity. Thus providing 45 percent more data at the same price.

For Rs. 22, idea users used to get 65 MB of 3G or 4G data for three days. Now, they will get 90 MB of 3G/4G data with a validity of three days for the same price, resulting an increase of 38 percent in data volume.
Data packages starting from Rs. 8 up to Rs. 225 have been revised with the new tariff plan with increased data offered at same price point. The revamped packages are now available for all of the 175 million Idea users across India.

Recently we have seen Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecom operator bring down data costs by fifty percent for night Internet users. The company introduced Airtel Happy Hours between 3 am to 5 am in which users are entitled to get back 50 percent of data consumed during that period of time. If an Airtel user consumes 100 MB of data between 3 am to 5 am, he will get back 50 MB of data into his / her account.
