India ranks as top Asian country in sending scientists, engineers to US says report

Washington: India ranks as the top Asian country from which immigrant engineers and scientists go to the United States (U.S.). Out of the 2.96 million immigrants coming from Asia, 950,000 are Indians. These statistics were for the year 2013 displaying an 85% increase from a decade before that. The report was from the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES).

The count of scientists as well as engineers present in the US increased from 21.6 million to 29 million. During the same period, the number of immigrant scientists as well as engineers increased from 3.4 million to 5.2 million.

As per the 2013 data, 15% of US immigrant scientists as well as engineers were temporary visa holders, 22% were permanent residents, and 63% were naturalized citizens. 57% of the immigrant scientists as well as engineers in the US were Asian born, 20% were North American born (except the US), South America, Central America or the Caribbean.

Immigrant scientists, as well as engineers, were more qualified than their American-born counterparts. 32% of the immigrant task force had their highest qualification as masters as compared to just 29% American-born counterparts.

9% of the immigrants had a doctorate while only 4% of Americans had the same. The most popular broad fields of study for the immigrant workforce were computer and mathematical sciences, engineering as well as social and related sciences.

More than 80 % of immigrant scientists as well as engineers were employed as were their American-born counterparts. Within the immigrants, the biggest share of 18 % were employed in the computer and mathematical sciences whereas the second biggest share of 8% were employed in engineering.

The three occupations of social and related scientists, computer, and mathematical scientists, life scientists experienced considerable immigrant employment growth from the years 2003 to 2013.

As it can be seen America’s technological and scientific growth is fueled by immigrant scientist and engineers. The latter have a major role to play in America being the foremost place for scientific research and innovation.
