MacBook Pro 2016 vs Microsoft Surface Book: Which laptop you should go for?

Apple released the much-awaited Apple MacBook Pro in both 13-inch and 15-inch variants with a Touch Bar. In fact, the Cupertino-based tech giant has released four models – two for each display. Microsoft also released the much-anticipated Surface Book with a new hinge design. In this article, we will compare the specifications of both Apple MacBook Pro and Microsoft Surface Book.

MacBook Pro vs Surface Book: Display

Apple MacBook Pro features a 15.4-inch LED IPS display with a resolution of 2880 x 1800 pixels at a pixel density of 220PPI. Moreover, the display offers a brightness level of 500nits and P3 wide color gamut. The touch bar enables you to instantly access all the required tools by working with a strip of glass built into the keyboard.

New MacBook Pro

Microsoft Surface Book is equipped with a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 3000 x 2000 pixels at a pixel density of 367PPI. The 10 point multi-touch display will offer a contrast ratio of 1700:1.

The MacBook Pro costing $2399 features an Intel Core i7 processor with a clock speed of 2.6GHz, 256GB SSD storage and 16GB of internal storage. However, the MacBook Pro with a retail price of $2799 is equipped with an Intel Core i7 processor with a clock speed of 2.7GHz, 512GB SSD storage and 16GB of internal storage.

Microsoft Surface Pro will ship with 6th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, 8GB/16GB RAM and internal storage of128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB capacities.

MacBook Pro vs Surface Book: Graphics

Apple MacBook Pro featured Radeon Pro 450 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory alongside the default Intel HD Graphics 530. In the case of the higher 512GB storage mode, you will be able to work with Radeon Pro 455 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory paired with default graphics.

Microsoft Surface Book features NVIDIA GeForce dGPU with 1GB GDDR5 memory. Moreover, if you extend the Book via the performance base, you can work with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M 2GB graphics.

MacBook Pro vs Surface Book: Camera and Sound

Apple MacBook Pro is only equipped with an HD FaceTime camera. However, Surface Book features an 8MP autofocus rear camera alongside 5MP front-facing snapper.

MacBook Pro features stereo speakers with high dynamic range, three microphones, and 3.5 mm headphone jack. In the case of Surface Book, you have Stereo speakers with Dolby Audio Premium with dual microphones.

Apple MacBook Pro is capable of delivering a usage time of up to 10 hours via the integrated 76.0-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery. Microsoft claims that the new Surface Book is capable of offering up to 12 hours of video playback and 16 hours of backup with performance base.

The 256GB storage model of MacBook Pro will cost $2399. However, the 512GB variant is priced at $2799. Microsoft Surface Book starts at $1499 for 128GB and goes up to $3299 for 1TB. The pricing will vary depending upon storage and processor. All other features are same.

Conclusion

The new Apple MacBook and Surface Book are hard-core machines. They are meant for power users and not for budget freaks. If you look at the pricing, the newly released gadgets are expensive. If you convert the price into Indian currency, you will find it expensive. We expect Microsoft to release the new Surface Book around January.

  1. Apple just lost its path since steve jobs passed away. That’s sad. Microsoft is for sure the new apple.

    • I don’t know about Microsoft being the new Apple, but Apple is definitely falling into dark times again…and there is no Steve Jobs to bring it back. I will stick with Apple for now though…I hope it gets better.
