Volkswagen India recalls 3 lakh last gen Skoda Superb over diesel emission scandal

Volkswagen recalls skoda superb

Involved in a huge emission scandal, the German automobile behemoth Volkswagen has finally started calling back its diesel cars in India. The first one of the lot is Skoda Superb. The affected cars belong to all of its brands including the big three: Audi, Skoda, and the named Volkswagen. An estimated number of 300,000 cars from the group are involved.

After getting the approval for its proposed solutions, the recall has been initiated so that the proposals are implemented. The last-gen Skoda Superb had the 2.0-litre diesel engine which was bugged with a cheat software and add-on to bypass the emission test.
The software helped the engine emit less pollution in a controlled environment, but it emitted 40 percent more pollution under normal conditions.

Volkswagen India to update new software

The new software updates shall control the emissions for the 1.5l and the 2.0l engines, whereas a plastic filter in the air intake shall reduce the pollution for the 1.2l engine. The owners will be reached out to by the dealerships and service centers for the recalls to make the call-back happen. They will be replaced free of cost.

Last month, the company recalled around nine million vehicles. It called on the owners to return their Amarok light pickup trucks to get a free software fix so that the vehicles become compliant with the European Emission laws. Volkswagen also has been dealing with US environmental regulators who are pressuring them to recall 600,000 vehicles.

The diesel emission norms have started to get tightened in the country. The new BS VI regulations (move impending 2020) in the country has already started to put a full-stop to diesel engines among mid-budget cars in the country. This has affected the biggest of brands like Honda, Suzuki, etc. More models are going to follow the exit from diesel in the country.

Notably, the spy images reveal the car in all its shiny glory with no camouflage, as even badges are visible on the car’s rear. The model spotted testing was a diesel variant, which is equipped with the company’s new EA288 2.0-litre diesel engine, also found on the Skoda Octavia and the Audi A3.

Volkswagen Passat Launch Date expected next year

The car is expected to hit Indian roads in the second quarter of next year, i.e., April – June 2017. The company has also equipped the upcoming Passat with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Though unlike the Toyota Camry hybrid, the petrol-electric Passat hybrid is going be to a plug-in hybrid. The petrol engine and the electric motor churns out a combined output 215 hp of horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. While the engine is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox.

The upcoming Passat is based on the company’s MQB platform and weighs 85 kg lesser than its earlier model. Though the company claims that despite the reduction in overall kerb weight, the car’s cabin space has increased. Besides, it also gets a slew of cosmetic changes such as an updated front which now sports three slat chrome grills flanked by the LED headlamps.

Volkswagen Passat Price

The company is expected to initially launch the standard 2.0-litre diesel engine variant. While it’s petrol-hybrid ‘GTE’ variant showcased earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo could follow later. The upcoming Volkswagen Passat is expected to be priced around Rs. 30 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will compete against the likes of the Skoda Superb and the Toyota Camry.

Back in 2015, the Volkswagen Passat bagged the ‘car of the year’ award at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show. It bagged a total score of 340 points from the judges, comprehensively beating rivals which include the likes of BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, Ford Mondeo and Mercedes C-Class.

India-bound Volkswagen Tiguan XL 7-seater SUV coming next year

Volkswagen will reportedly launch a 7-seater variant of the VW Tiguan SUV in India in the first half 2017. The version has now been spotted without camouflage for the first time, suggesting that the SUV is expected to make it’s global debut in the near future.

The upcoming 7-seater model of the VW Tiguan will reportedly feature an extended wheelbase expected to be around 110 mm longer compared to the standard Tiguan. The German manufacturer has used this extended wheelbase to add a third row of seats. Compared to its 5-seater version, the VW Tiguan 7-seater model sports a slightly redesigned grille with chrome accents and an entirely new bumper with silver treatment. On its sides, the SUV flaunts a redesigned greenhouse, extra claddings and a new set of alloy wheels.

While the back of the SUV looks exactly like its 5-seater model. The increased wheel-base makes the Tiguan look more like a cross-over rather than an SUV. The 7-seater VW Tiguan also offers additional boot space, which can be extended by folding rear seats, giving it added practicality for markets such as India and China.

The VW Tiguan will lock horns against the likes of Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero in the Indian market. It will be offered in two options – a 1.8-litre TSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI diesel and is expected to be priced in between the range of Rs. 28 lakh to Rs. 35 lakh in India.

Volkswagen agrees to buyback diesel cars, emissions settlement to cost Rs. 1 lakh crore

The German automaker has agreed to spend a gigantic sum of $15 billion (around Rs. 1 lakh crore) in lieu of settling consumer lawsuits and government allegations regarding its diesel cars that were designed to cheat during the emission tests. The settlement amount for the emissions cheating scandal is believed to be the biggest amongst any other auto-related settlement claims.

The segregation of the entire sum is allowing Volkswagen to allot $10.3 billion in buybacks to the owners of around 4,75,000 diesel cars and around $5 billion, which will be used in funds to offset diesel emissions and increase the production of zero-emission vehicles.

Still, the total amount is pushing over $15 billion when we add in all the separate settlements with the US state attorney generals for excessive diesel emission which will amount to $500 million.

As of now, Volkswagen has not deciphered a solution for reducing the diesel emissions of the faulty vehicles but in any case, it will pay between $5100 to $10000 to all the owners as the compensation, apart from the buyback.

US District judge Charles Breyer needs to approve the settlement and a meeting scheduled for 26th of July will render the preliminary approval but the final approval is expected in the month of October.

The news of this settlement offers a sigh of relief for the owners as well. Owners are relieved as the plan is coming together but are still a little upset over the fact that they bought their vehicles considering them as high-performance and environment-friendly. Whereas, in reality, their vehicles’ emissions vastly exceeded the US Pollution laws.

Models covered under the settlement include 2009-2015 Audi A3 and Jetta, Golf (2010-2015) and the 2012-15 Beetle and Passat, in the 2-litre engine segment. There are 80,000 3-litre diesel engine cars waiting to be rectified and lawyers are currently working on their settlements.

Volkswagen rolls out first ‘Made in India’ sedan Ameo

VW Ameo

Volkswagen has rolled out its first “Made in India” sedan Ameo from the Chakan plant in Pune. Before this, the German makers have made three other cars in India – Polo, Vento and Skoda Fabia.

This is the first sub-4 meter compact sedan in the country, and it costs the company Rs. 720 crore right from development to production. The car was manufactured on the same platform as the Polo, but developed and designed for the local market.

The pre-launch bookings opened two weeks ago and the car is still gaining attention. The car comes in two variants: a three-cylinder 1.2L petrol engine (75 hp power and 110Nm torque) and a four cylinder 1.5L diesel engine (similar to that of Polo). The diesel engine, however, will be rolled out later this year. The car is equipped with dual front airbags. The most attractive features include cruise control and rain sensing wipers along with static cornering lights.

Being one among 13 foreign car manufacturers (one of two German), the company has invested Rs. 5,720 crores in the Indian market. This is the maximum investment done by any German company. With this car, Volkswagen becomes one of the early risers in the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

The production of their cars is not done only for the purpose of selling within the country. Of the 123,456 units produced by the company last year, 65% was exported; most of which was sent to South-America. The name Ameo comes from the Spanish word “amo”, which means “I love”.

Volkswagen AG penalty could go over $90 Bn for environmental violations in the US

Volkswagen was facing the heat from the US Justice Department when it sued the German automobile maker for installing devices so that it could bypass the emission control regime of US. The charges against Volkswagen AG along with its Audi and Porsche units could carry a penalty more than $90 billion at the rate of $37,500 per vehicle violation of the Act based on complaints. Government regulators had earlier said that Volkswagen could face a fine more than $18 billion.

Volkswagen however in a statement said that it hoped to repair all the vehicles (8.5 million diesel cars) which it sold in Europe which do not cater to the emission standards by the end of 2016.Head of Volkswagen’s top-selling brand said that he is confident of reaching an agreement with the US regulators to bring all the 500,000 diesel vehicles at par with the US emission laws.
Talking at a press conference at the CES in Las Vegas Nevada, VW brand Chief Herbert Diess said that he is confident of finding an acceptable solution to the problem.

Volkswagen had admitted that it installed software in select diesel models sold in the US which helped to hoodwink the government emissions tests, but then emit nearly 40 times the allowed levels of pollutants on the road.

Assistant attorney general, ‘John Cruden’, head of the department’s Environment and Natural resources division said that the US will be unflinching in ensuring Volkswagen will rectify the violations of our nation’s clean air laws.

Senior Justice Department officials said that Volkswagen knew what it was doing and intentionally violated the law. The Justice Department charged Volkswagen of four counts of breaching the US Clean Air Act. It included interfering with the emissions control system and failing to report violations.

Volkswagen rolled out 10% more cars from its Chakan plant in 2015

Volkswagen Chakan Plant 2015 Pc Tablet Media

Volkswagen said that it had produced 1, 23,456 units at its Chakan plant in 2015. It is a 10% growth as compared to last year, and it is some good news for the beleaguered German automobile giant that was hit by cheating scandal on emission tests.

The Indian unit was not immune from the worldwide slump in sales after the scandal became public. Sales in India fell by a third in the last four months; still Volkswagen managed a decent growth.

A statement by the company stated that the car production at Chakan plant was 1, 23,456 in 2015. It was 12,012 units more when compared to last year.

President and Managing Director of Volkswagen India Private Ltd, Andreas Lauermann, said that the Pune plant has increased its production thrice in a row, and this has been possible only due to growing demands created in the international as well as domestic markets.

Volkswagen sold 43,152 cars in India in 2015 as compared to 44,212 cars in the previous year. The leftover will be sold in the coming months. Just after the emission scandal, sales of Volkswagen in India fell from fell to 11,000 units in the last four months against 16,668 units in the same period of 2014.

Volkswagen had been going along smoothly in the first half but was hit by the global emission scandal in the last four months of 2015. The scandal slowed its growth in the second half of the year.

However, Lauermann was optimistic and said that a new compact sedan is in the pipeline, and Volkswagen will be increasing the pace in 2016. Volkswagen has exclusively designed a Compact Sedan for Indian markets and will be introduced in both Petrol and Diesel Variants.
