Opera has announced that it’ll be providing a free unlimited VPN (Virtual Private Network) service that’s integrated with the browser. This means that you don’t have to download additional extensions or files for safe and secure browsing and keep yourself anonymous.

A virtual private network essentially camouflages your IP address and hides your identity while browsing the web. For example, if your PC is physically located in Mumbai, it will act as if your PC is located in New Delhi or any other city. This essentially keeps you anonymous while surfing, and also allows you to access websites that are usually restricted in your country.

Opera now bakes in free VPN which uses the SurfEasy VPN service acquired by the company last year. Here’s a list of steps you should follow to enable VPN on your Opera browser:

Enable VPN on Windows and Linux

  • Once you’ve installed the browser, just head over to Settings, and then select Privacy and Security. Then scroll down and you’ll see the VPN settings. Then all you have to do is click on the ‘Enable VPN option’.

  • The next step is to go to any website. Once you have opened the site, you’ll see a VPN option right next to the URL bar. Then just toggle the on/off button to ON.
  • Then click on the Virtual Location option, which allows you to select the virtual location of the VPN which can be Canada, Germany or the United States.

  •  Just choose any location among the four mentioned above and you’re ready to go. Now you’re browsing sites anonymously.

Enable VPN on Mac

Enable VPN in iOS

Opera also launched the new VPN app for iOS, which is again free to use with unlimited data. To use the Opera VPN on iOS and change your device’s location:

  • Open the Opera VPN app and enable the VPN service.
  • Tap on the region button in the top-right corner of the app which either shows a lightning bolt or two letter country code.
  • Then just select the country you like.

Wrap Up

Opera’s new VPN is ideal for users willing to make sure their data stays private and credentials secured while surfing the web in coffee shops, hotels, airports, or railway stations. Besides, it allows you to stream a movie or a YouTube video that’s not available in your country or region.

Of course, it’s still early days, and Opera’s new VPN is no match the more fully-featured VPNs out there, but nonetheless, a step in the right direction and one can’t argue with the free and unlimited usage on offer.

If you’d want to give it a shot, just grab the developer version of Opera which you can download here.
