Former OpenAI Chief Scientist Sets Course for Safe Superintelligence with New Startup
Former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever launches Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a new AI startup focused on developing safe and beneficial superintelligent systems.

Ilya Sutskever, the former Chief Scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, has launched a new venture, Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), with a singular focus: developing artificial intelligence (AI) that is both highly capable and fundamentally safe.

Sutskever, renowned for his pioneering work in AI research, announced his departure from OpenAI just last month. Now, he has teamed up with industry veterans Daniel Gross, formerly of Apple, and Daniel Levy, another ex-OpenAI researcher, to tackle what they see as the most pressing challenge of our time.

SSI’s Mission: Safety First

The company’s mission statement is unambiguous: “We have started the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence.” This laser-like focus sets SSI apart in a landscape where AI development often races ahead of safety considerations.

In a blog post, the founders outlined their approach: “We will pursue safe superintelligence in a straight shot, with one focus, one goal, and one product.” They envision a future where AI capabilities and safety measures advance hand-in-hand, enabling what they call “peaceful scaling” of AI technologies.

A Straight Path to Safe Superintelligence

SSI aims to push the boundaries of AI research while ensuring that robust safety protocols remain ahead of the curve. This strategy aims to mitigate the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems, such as unintended consequences or misuse.

While the technical details of SSI’s approach remain under wraps, the company’s emphasis on safety is a clear departure from the “move fast and break things” ethos that has often characterized the tech industry.

A Team of AI Pioneers

The team behind SSI boasts a wealth of experience in AI research and development. Sutskever, in particular, is widely regarded as a leading figure in the field, having played a pivotal role in the development of some of OpenAI’s most significant breakthroughs.

Gross and Levy, too, bring valuable expertise to the table. Gross led AI efforts at Apple, while Levy is known for his contributions to AI safety research at OpenAI.

SSI’s path forward is fraught with challenges. Developing safe superintelligence is a complex and multifaceted problem, requiring both technical innovation and ethical considerations. However, the company’s commitment to safety, coupled with its experienced team, suggests that it may be well-positioned to make significant strides in this critical area.

As AI continues to permeate every aspect of our lives, the importance of ensuring its safety cannot be overstated. SSI’s mission is a timely and essential one, and its success could have far-reaching implications for the future of AI and humanity.
