Google is broadening the availability of its Gemini Live feature, which enables two-way voice conversations with its AI chatbot, Gemini. This expansion follows an initial limited release last month. Gemini Live, unveiled at Google I/O earlier this year, offers users a more natural and seamless interaction with Gemini, eliminating the need for typed prompts or reading responses. This premium feature is exclusively accessible to Gemini Advanced subscribers.
Wider Rollout Announced
Google’s September 4th release notes for Gemini confirmed the wider rollout of Gemini Live, stating, “Starting in English, Gemini Live is a new way to have natural, free-flowing conversations with Gemini on your phone […] Now available in Gemini Advanced.”
While the initial public testing involved a limited number of Gemini Advanced subscribers, Google is now extending access to a larger user base. The release notes did not clarify whether Gemini Live would be universally available to all eligible users or remain region-restricted. However, the feature is currently limited to Android smartphones and tablets.
Feature Highlights
During its unveiling, Google highlighted that Gemini Live would offer 10 distinct voices, each with its own energy level, pitch, and tonality. The feature functions even when the Gemini app is in the background or the device is locked, aiming to provide a user experience akin to a regular phone call.
Accessing Gemini Live
Gemini Advanced subscribers can access the feature by opening the Gemini app on their Android device and tapping the Live icon, represented by a waveform. First-time users will need to follow on-screen instructions. Once set up, they can enjoy the hands-free interaction.
Limitations and Requirements
It’s important to note that Gemini Live is currently unavailable on the Gemini web app, Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini tab in the Google app on iPhone, or when signed in to a work or school account. Users must set their device’s first language to English (United States) and be at least 18 years old to utilize the feature.
