India Meteorological Department and 1Weather Join Hands to Bring Weather Alerts to 235 Million Indians via Glance Lock Screen

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has partnered with InMobi’s 1Weather, a globally renowned weather app, to deliver critical weather alerts to 235 million smartphone users in India. This collaboration will enable users with Glance-enabled lock screens to receive real-time weather warnings directly on their phones, enhancing safety and preparedness across the nation.

Innovative Partnership for Instant Alerts

The partnership, formalized through a Letter of Agreement (LoA), marks a unique step in utilizing technology for public welfare. By integrating IMD’s advanced weather forecasting capabilities with the Glance platform, smartphone users can now access critical updates without unlocking their devices. This feature is especially valuable during emergencies, allowing swift action and minimizing potential loss of life and property.

Advanced Weather Forecasting and Hyperlocal Alerts

The India Meteorological Department employs sophisticated numerical weather prediction models to provide accurate forecasts. Long-term alerts for events like cyclones, low-pressure systems, and depressions are issued 3 to 5 days in advance, enabling better preparedness. Additionally, hyper-localized alerts for short-term events, such as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, or hailstorms, are now accessible directly on smartphone lock screens, ensuring widespread and timely dissemination of critical information.

How Glance and 1Weather Enhance Accessibility

Glance, an AI-driven platform, delivers personalized and relevant content to the lock screens of Android smartphones. This eliminates the need for users to search, unlock, or install multiple apps to stay informed. Glance’s ability to localize content ensures alerts are tailored to users’ specific regions and presented in an easily comprehensible format. This feature enhances accessibility and usability for users across diverse locations and linguistic preferences.

Statements from Leaders

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, stated, “IMD continues to advance its weather and climate services. As we celebrate 150 years of our organization, this partnership with InMobi and 1Weather represents our commitment to leveraging technology for a safer and more climate-resilient India.”

Srikanth Subramanian, Vice President and General Manager of 1Weather, added, “This collaboration with IMD will ensure that severe weather alerts reach users directly on their lock screens, enabling timely action and saving lives. After achieving success in the USA, we are excited to bring this transformative experience to India, making a positive societal impact.”

Glance for Good: A Commitment to Social Impact

This initiative is part of Glance’s “Glance for Good” program, which leverages the platform’s AI capabilities and extensive reach for social welfare. By integrating weather alerts into the lock screen experience, Glance aims to support public safety, disaster preparedness, and community well-being.

Bikash Chowdhury, Chief Marketing Officer at InMobi and Glance, commented, “Weather affects everyone, from daily commuters to farmers. Through Glance for Good, we’re democratizing access to essential weather data, ensuring it reaches those who need it most.”

Availability and Future Expansion

These live weather updates will soon be available on Glance-enabled lock screens and later through the 1Weather app, which is accessible on the Google Play Store. With its global reputation as one of the top five weather apps in the USA and LATAM, 1Weather is set to make a significant impact in India.
