2014 was a good year for Motorola. It not only made good worldwide sales in terms of its newest Android phones, but it also made a milestone in one of the world’s biggest emerging markets, India.
According to the Economic Times, Motorola has sold over 3 million smartphones in India since February 2014. The success was largely contributed by two of its entry level smartphones, Moto G and Moto E. The phones do not cost too much but do not sacrifice performance for the price.
Sources said that only these two smartphones took up half of the total sales in 2014. The Moto G has already started receiving Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update which has made a positive impression on the company and is attracting more users to consider Motorola smartphones. During Q3 2014, Motorola was the fifth largest smartphone manufacturer in India, trailing behind Samsung, Micromax and other homegrown manufacturers like Lava and Karbonn.
Motorola is already preparing for an even better year by opening up more retail points across India. The company said that the first retail will open up in Bangalore. More retail stores will follow in other cities of the country.
Motorola became talk of the world after it was acquired by Google. But it wasn’t before the Moto G came out when it started making an impact on the smartphone world. Moto G saw a dual-SIM variant and a second generation. A second generation of Moto X was also released in 2014 which received the best smartphone of the year title from many publishers across the world.
But the success of the company was largely dominated by the budget phones Moto G and Moto E. It remains to be seen what the company has up its sleeves for 2015 as the competition in smartphone industry is getting tougher.
