G42's Hindi LLM Empowers India with Generative AI
Microsoft-backed G42 introduces Nanda, a 13B-parameter Hindi LLM trained on 2.13 trillion tokens, empowering India's Hindi-speaking population with generative AI capabilities.

Microsoft-backed G42, an Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology company, has unveiled its latest innovation: Nanda, a Hindi large language model (LLM) designed specifically for the Indian market. This generative AI model represents a significant step in making AI more accessible and inclusive for the vast Hindi-speaking population in India.

Nanda: The Hindi LLM

The announcement of Nanda took place at the UAE-India Business Forum in Mumbai in the presence of dignitaries including the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry. G42 India CEO Manu Kumar Jain proudly introduced the LLM, named after the majestic second-highest mountain peak in India, Nanda Devi.

Nanda’s Capabilities and Technical Prowess

Nanda is a testament to G42’s commitment to technological advancement. It boasts a massive 13-billion-parameter model, trained on an impressive 2.13 trillion tokens of language datasets encompassing Hindi, English, and Hinglish. This extensive training equips Nanda with a deep understanding of not only Hindi but also the nuances of Hinglish, the hybrid language widely used in India. The model’s bilingual capabilities make it a versatile tool for a variety of applications.

The Potential of Nanda

While G42 has not yet disclosed specific use cases or a release timeline for Nanda, the potential impact of this LLM is undeniable. Jain envisions Nanda as a catalyst for technological progress in India, seamlessly integrating into various sectors and empowering over half a billion Hindi language speakers to harness the potential of generative AI. Nanda’s ability to understand and generate text in Hindi, English, and Hinglish could revolutionize communication, education, content creation, and various other domains.

G42’s AI Leadership

The launch of Nanda further solidifies G42’s position as a frontrunner in AI innovation. The company has a proven track record of developing cutting-edge AI models, including the open-source Arabic LLM, Jais. Microsoft’s substantial investment in G42 underscores the company’s potential and the global recognition of its AI expertise.

Nanda represents a significant milestone in the democratization of AI, making advanced language capabilities accessible to a wider audience in India. As G42 continues to push the boundaries of AI, we can anticipate further groundbreaking developments that will shape the future of technology in India and beyond.
