Nowadays there is a lot of discussion going around people about the possibility of a third World War and its impact on our Earth. But according to NASA, the earth is going to face a bigger threat than the World War or a potential nuclear war or even an asteroid attack. And this new threat is present beneath our feet which are called super volcanoes.
NASA said that there are about 20 potential super volcanoes scattered across the world and if only one of them erupts then this could cause greater damage to the human race as compared to any asteroid. But fortunately, NASA has figured out a plan to tackle those supervolcanoes.
The Yellowstone Caldera, hidden below the Yellowstone National Park, is a huge and enormous crater-like depression measuring 30 miles by 45 miles and is full of red-hot magma. If this erupts and explodes, then it would eject out hundreds of cubic miles of molten material and will destroy everything within 60 miles. The ash left out from the explosion will make the state of Wyoming and surrounding states completely wrapped with three feet of volcanic debris. Along with that, the gases and dust discharged by this type of eruption will completely wipe out the crops and will make the world transformed into an ice age which will last for a decade and can kill million s of species.
And now NASA has developed a master plan to defuse the high scale explosive potential of the Yellowstone Caldera. Dr. Brian Wilcox, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said that the main aim is to weaken the threat that Yellowstone possesses towards humanity gradually. Although this type of eruption is likely to happen in anybody’s given lifetime, it is a certainty that someday it will eventually explode and the impacts can be very devastating.
Wilcox and his colleagues believe they can significantly decrease the risk in Yellowstone by drilling into the hot rock near the magma chamber of the huge crater. They think that if they can siphon the heat from caldera and then convert the geothermal energy into electricity, then they can successfully prevent the eruption.
Also, the water that is pumped into the hot rock will come out to the surface possessing a temperature of more than 600 degrees Fahrenheit, and this water can be used to drive the turbines and generate electricity, and after the water cools then, it will be again pumped back underground to gain more heat.
