NASA Discovers 10 New Earth-Like Planets

Astronomers have added 219 more candidates to the emergent catalog of planets found beyond the solar system. Among the listing, 10 are almost the same size and temperature as the Earth. The scientists used the Kepler Space Telescope to study more than 200,000 samples of stars. The 10 recently revealed rocky substances are suitably distanced from their original stars probably to collect liquid water on their surfaces.

NASA in 2009 launched Kepler space telescope to find out the existence of the Earth-like planets and whether it’s a common or rare occurrence. The final data collected from Kepler’s telescope will enable the scientists to determine the possibility that life exist beyond the Earth. The previous studies using other telescope surveys have established the existence of about 3,500 planets in the solar system.

Kepler’s data also gives new approaches on how to evaluate the distinctions among the planets so as to establish the chances of finding life on other planets. The scientists discovered that the planets that are almost the size of the Earth or smaller are usually rocky while those that are bigger than the Earth tend to be gas-formed like Neptune.

The super-Earths or the mini-Neptunes planets as they are called are not located in the Earth’s solar system but researchers are still studying the solar system to find another possible ninth planet beyond Pluto.

Among the newly uncovered planets, there is one that looks similar to the Earth. It’s known as the KOI 7711.01 and the studies are underway to find out more about the new world. It’s about 30% larger than the Earth and it has a star-like sun that orbits, and it’s about 1,700 light-years far beyond.

The new world is surrounded by other stars that could be supplying it with warmth that pools the liquid water on its surface. The planet also gets enough amount of heat that we obtain from our own planet. But the researchers are yet to uncover more about the new planet. It’s still too early to conclude whether the new planet is really a twin Earth and the possibilities of it to sustain life.
