Nokia files second lawsuit against Apple for camera design, Siri features and more

Nokia’s recent lawsuit against Apple must be in the fresh memory of Nokia-Apple loyalists and tech enthusiasts. The Finnish company sued Apple for using its technical patents only this weekend and now it has again sued Apple for ten more patents. Referred as Patent-in-Suit, Nokia’s second lawsuits targets the use of RF technology, Siri features including Find my iPhone and more on Apple iPhone.

Nokia patent affects iPhone 7 series, iPhone 6 series, iPhone 5 and iPads

According to Nokia, Apple has been using the controversial RF part embedded in iPhone 6s, which is basically made by Qualcomm. Now the company has to say that all the Apple iPhones that use this Qualcomm RF part infringe its patents. “Additionally, Apple provides instruction manuals that instruct users of the ‘247 Accused Products to use the ‘247 Accused Products in a manner that infringes the ‘247 patent, such as by making cellular telephone calls.” The number of smartphones comprising this list goes up to 247 iPhones which include iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPads and more.

Nokia also claims to have picked some of the features of Siri. The filing says that some aspects of Siri services infringe their patent of interaction with Music and Mail like web-based services. It also claims of infringing one of its patents in iOS 10. Another blow by Nokia is on the camera design of iPhone. It says that the rear camera cut-out on iPhone is patented by Nokia.

As the result of the conflict, Apple has withdrawn all Withings products from the Apple store because of its integration with Nokia. If the Texas court rules in favour of Nokia, it may ask to take off all the infringing Apple products from the market, which is highly unlikely. (Nokia would make a settlement for a good Apple share). And if Nokia proves to be tarnishing Apple image, the Nokia brand might never reprise from the dead remains.
