Nokia supports Vi’s 5G launch readiness and 4G expansion targets

Nokia is supporting Vodafone Idea (Vi) as the telecom operator prepares for its phased 5G rollout in key markets. Along with aiding Vi’s 5G deployment, Nokia is also assisting with the rapid expansion of Vi’s 4G network after the operator secured fresh equity funding in recent quarters.

2025 is expected to be a crucial year for Vi, as the company aims to launch commercial 5G services starting March. Acting as Vi’s technology partner, Nokia has already delivered all the necessary equipment to enable 5G deployment, and the rollout process is moving swiftly.

Supporting Vi’s 4G Network Expansion

In addition to enabling 5G, Nokia is also driving Vi’s 4G network expansion efforts. The expansion includes rolling out new network sites, enhancing technology on existing sites, and increasing spectrum bandwidth. By March 2025, Nokia is expected to deliver over 60,000 technology sites, including several thousand new 4G sites. The deployment plan also includes ultra-lean sites, particularly designed to enhance service quality in urban areas with dense populations.

Deploying Advanced AirScale Technology

To support Vi’s growing network requirements, Nokia is deploying its AirScale portfolio, which includes Multi Radio Access Technology (RAT) baseband units and radio modules. These technologies are powered by Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide improved coverage and higher capacity.

Nokia is also upgrading Vi’s Network Management System using the new MantaRay series. Furthermore, Nokia will progressively implement the next-generation AirScale Multi RAT Outdoor compact baseband through a phased rollout.

Vi CTO Acknowledges Nokia’s Contribution

Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, expressed appreciation for Nokia’s continued support, emphasizing the role of Nokia in accelerating Vi’s investments and capital expenditure efforts. He highlighted how Nokia’s recent contributions have been exceptional and noted that the 4G expansion led by Nokia will further improve Vi’s coverage and capacity, enhancing the overall customer experience. Singh also stated that Vi is working closely with Nokia to deliver 5G services to customers as soon as possible.

Nokia Commits to Technology Advancement

Tarun Chhabra, Senior Vice President & Country Head, Nokia (India), reiterated Nokia’s commitment to providing reliable and high-performance network solutions. He noted that Nokia’s collaboration with Vi has enabled rapid delivery and deployment of both 5G and 4G sites. He also emphasized that the partnership reflects Nokia’s commitment to offering cutting-edge technology that enhances connectivity and supports new business opportunities.
