Samsung Empowers Healthcare Innovation with New Health SDK Suite
Samsung introduces a new Health SDK Suite, empowering developers to create innovative healthcare solutions with advanced sensor tech and health data access.

Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step towards advancing healthcare innovation with the launch of its new Samsung Health Software Development Kit (SDK) Suite. This comprehensive toolkit aims to facilitate the development of innovative digital health solutions by leveraging Samsung’s cutting-edge sensor technology and the extensive Samsung Health platform. The SDK Suite offers a complete package of sensor, data, accessory, and research stack components, making it readily accessible to a wider range of partners, developers, and researchers.

Sensor SDK: Unlocking Advanced Sensor Technology

The Sensor SDK equips developers with access to Samsung’s powerful BioActive Sensor algorithm on the Galaxy Watch. This empowers them to explore new health services and create advanced solutions. The BioActive Sensor can measure a wide range of health metrics, including heart rate, skin temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA).

The updated Sensor SDK provides continuous access to Photoplethysmogram (PPG) Infrared (IR) and Red LED sensor data for the first time. This enhancement is expected to contribute to the development of health services related to blood oxygen level (SpO2) and sleep quality. Additionally, the upgraded BIA now offers additional measurements—magnitude and degree—expanding on the existing eight indicators, including skeletal muscle mass and body fat mass. This provides a more precise body composition analysis, resulting in deeper insights into overall physical health.

Data SDK: Leveraging Comprehensive Health Insights

Starting in October, the newly added Data SDK will empower developers to utilize integrated health data from various devices, including the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring, smartphones, and even third-party devices. Developers can access health metrics such as sleep, exercise, blood pressure, food intake, and blood glucose levels—analyzed by Samsung Health’s advanced algorithms. This access to streamlined health insights is expected to significantly boost developer productivity in the creation of digital health solutions.

Accessory SDK: Promoting a Seamless Health Experience

The Accessory SDK enables the integration of compatible third-party health devices with the Samsung Health app. This includes devices such as blood pressure monitors, fitness devices like bike sensors, heart rate monitors, and even glucose monitors. This integration offers users a centralized platform to view health data from various devices without the need to open multiple third-party apps, thereby creating a more seamless and user-friendly health management experience.

Research Stack: Supporting Digital Health Research

The Research Stack is an open-source project that seeks to expand the digital health research ecosystem. It provides a flexible research environment by offering mobile and wearable app SDKs, a web portal, and backend services. These tools support all stages of the research process, from recruitment and surveys to progress tracking and results monitoring.

The recently updated Research Stack incorporates a more comprehensive toolset based on feedback from research institutions. Furthermore, the forthcoming 2.0 version will directly integrate the Sensor SDK and Data SDK from the Health SDK Suite. Leading institutions have already adopted Research Stack, underscoring Samsung’s commitment to supporting healthcare research and enabling more efficient studies with meaningful results.
