Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs Get Early Access to Recall
Microsoft unveils Recall, an AI-powered feature for Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs. Capture screenshots, search with natural language, and enjoy enhanced privacy controls.

Microsoft is taking a significant step forward in enhancing user experience with the introduction of “Recall,” an AI-powered feature designed to revolutionize how users interact with their PCs. This innovative tool, currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel using Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, promises to streamline workflows and boost productivity by allowing users to effortlessly search for information displayed on their screens.

Recall: A New Era of Information Access

Recall operates by capturing screenshots of active windows at regular intervals. These screenshots are then analyzed using the system’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in conjunction with an on-device AI model. This sophisticated process extracts key information and stores it in an SQLite database, enabling users to search for specific content using natural language queries. Imagine needing to recall a phone number displayed on a website you visited earlier. Instead of sifting through browser history or frantically searching open windows, Recall allows you to simply type “phone number from that website about…” and instantly retrieve the relevant screenshot.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

Microsoft understands the importance of user privacy and has taken proactive steps to address potential concerns surrounding Recall. The feature is strictly opt-in, requiring users to explicitly consent to the capture and storage of screenshots. Furthermore, Recall leverages Windows Hello for authentication, ensuring that only authorized users can access the stored information. Sensitive data, such as credit card details, passwords, and personal identification numbers, are automatically filtered out, and users have the flexibility to exclude specific apps, websites, or in-private browsing sessions from being captured.

Security Measures and Enterprise Controls

In addition to privacy safeguards, Recall incorporates robust security measures. Anti-hammering and rate-limiting features protect against malicious attempts to exploit the system, while users can further customize their security settings by selecting specific apps and websites to exclude from snapshot searches. Recognizing the unique needs of enterprise environments, Microsoft has designed Recall to be disabled by default on enterprise devices. IT administrators have the authority to enable the feature, empowering employees to opt-in if desired, while maintaining control over organizational data security.

Data Handling and Transparency

Microsoft emphasizes its commitment to data transparency and user control. Snapshots captured by Recall are stored locally on the user’s device and are not transmitted to Microsoft or any third parties. They are also not utilized for training purposes. The company has no access to the encryption keys used to protect the snapshot data, ensuring user privacy. Future updates will introduce mechanisms for users to back up their encryption keys, safeguarding their data and enabling seamless transitions to new devices or after system resets.

The introduction of Recall marks a significant milestone in Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI seamlessly into the Windows user experience. This innovative feature has the potential to transform how users interact with information on their PCs, boosting productivity and streamlining workflows. By prioritizing user privacy and security, Microsoft is building trust and paving the way for a future where AI empowers users in a responsible and ethical manner.
